Day 246 ~ The 60s & Me

Having been born in the early 1960s, most of my memories of the decade are as a little girl.  But... there is a lot I do remember... some from personal recollection... some stories... and other memories are from photographs and collectibles.

I do remember my family being gathered around the television the day we landed on the moon... as I also remember the aftermath of what the 60s left behind.

I remember my mother and aunts speaking of Twiggy, which in my opinion needed to put on some healthy weight.  I personally think that Twiggy was the beginning to the end of the voluptuous women's curves.  As time would go on to prove, that curves such as those of Marilyn Monroe's were then looked upon as being too curvy or overweight.

I still don't get that one!  As far as I'm concerned, Marilyn's curves beat out Twiggy's straight boxy lines any day!

Here are some other things I remember from the 60s...
Andy Warhol;  Grateful Dead;  Jimi Hendrix;  Gunsmoke;  Star Trek (first inter-racial kiss on tv 1968);  The Beattles;  John F. Kennedy;  Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy; Bewitched;  Vietnam;  Diana Ross;  Tang;  Moon Landing;  JFK Assassination;  MLK Assassination;  Woodstock;  Free Love;  Hippies;  Peace
After a little look see I also found out that the 60s brought us Benihana, Kentucky Fried Chicken, color in the kitchen (the wonderful avocado green) and futuristic designs in the home, as well as Shrimp Scampi (which is actually translates to 'Shrimp Shrimp'  lol!), the luxury of flying and the Boeing 747!

By the time the end of 1969 came around, I was a mere six and a half years old, had a sister three years younger, and a little brother who arrived near the end of 1969.  Life was so simple.  Mom and dad took care of everything.  Life was great.

The 60s also brought entertaining in the home, and that my parents did a lot.  I also remember that anytime company would come visit from overseas the Playboy Club and Las Vegas were the places to go.  All the adults would go... children would get babysitters. Maybe they should have gone to church a little more.  wink, wink.

We stand today on the edge of a new frontier -- the frontier of the 1960s, a frontier of unknown opportunities and perils, a frontier of unfulfilled hopes and threats. The new frontier of which I speak is not a set of promises -- it is a set of challenges. ~ John F. Kennedy (1917-1963) Thirty-fifth President of the USA
The thing the sixties did was to show us the possibilities and the responsibility that we all had. It wasn't the answer. It just gave us a glimpse of the possibility. ~ John Lennon (1940-1980)
In 1968, in the midst of the tumultuous 1960s, the Olympics were much more than just another event. Peggy Fleming
Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. Muhammad Ali
What do I wear in bed? Why, Chanel No.5, of course. ~ Marilyn Monroe
You can't separate peace from freedom because no one can be at peace unless he has his freedom. ~ Malcolm X
Love is the only force capable of turning an enemy into a friend. ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.
I would say that I'm a nonviolent soldier. In place of weapons of violence, you have to use your mind, your heart, your sense of humor, every faculty available to you...because no one has the right to take the life of another human being. ~ Joan Baez
Blessings to all!!

119 days to go...

PS... Sons, I love and miss you.  To the moon and stars above and back.  You are my sunshine(s).

What a decade of revolution. The peace driven era. I was born about 20 years too late. Born into the gen x, I would have prefered the 60's I think.

Hi
We found your blog to be of great interest. First let me explain who we are and then I want to go on to pin point why we took a particular interest in what you had to say.
We are two brothers, one living in the UK (Mike) and the other in the US (Laurence) who have blogged from time to time about the Sixties and even created a website – BabyboomReview, which is now alas no longer but included reviews of books, films, music etc from the era. (The ghost of the site can be found at http://babyboomreview.wetpaint.com/).
Now we are intending to produce an anthology of writing from people like yourself, who lived through the 1960s, in order to create a generational view of the culture and politics of the decade that might be available for our children and grandchildren to read. What makes this project a bit different from the usual historical and often nostalgic look at the past is that we want to encourage our contributors to reflect on why a Sixties` experience was important to them - both then and possibly later.
So, in brief, we are in the process of selecting about 30 to 40 really well-focused bloggers who can provide, as you can, a first-hand personal account of a particular Sixties` moment - whether it be an event, film or album - and say something about its influence on their life and attitudes. Pieces can be up to a maximum of 3,000 words.
Please let us know whether this project appeals to you as soon as possible and don`t hesitate to contact us should you have any questions. Our email address is - boomersangle@gmail.com
